EDC, WIMB, essentials, whatever you call the stuff you carry everyday is the topic of our latest blog series. We ask productive people to empty their bags and share their everyday carry with us to find out what helps them make stuff happen and what they can't live without.

Bag owner: Gabriela, Teacher (Germany)

Gabriela, a high school teacher in Thuringia, Germany, reveals her secret weapons that have allowed her to downsize her school day carry while keeping her students happy.

What's in your everyday bag and why?

In the last few years, what I carry everyday has become less. Instead of textbooks for each class and subject, I now have my iPad with me at all times and on it ebook versions of most textbooks and class materials. For the few textbooks where there is no ebook available, I have two copies - one which I keep at home for preparing classes and one that I keep in the school to have available during class. For this reason alone, my backpack is much lighter these days than a few years ago.

my iPad has made me much more productive when I am out and about

Apart from everyday things like glasses, keys, a mirror and comb, the second most important item in my bag is my calendar. While I love my iPad, writing my schedule quickly comes easier on paper, plus it also contains students' information and grades.

Being a maths teacher, I carry various stationery items which are needed for geometry like a compass, various rulers and triangles, pens, pencils as well as chalk for the blackboard and a special dice for statistics. One of my pens is a souvenir from Rome and it has an in-built usb stick which is great for swapping files with my colleagues without having a small item that gets lost easily.

In our school, not everything is as paperless as it could be so I still carry a selection of paper clips, a small hole punch and more pens and fountain pen refills than I would like to.

Last but not least, I also carry a variety of cute stamps and stickers which I give to students for good efforts. They love them and it's a great and simple way to keep them engaged.

What's your minimum must-carry?

My minimum would be the iPad and calendar. Between these two, I have almost everything I need to prepare for another week's classes or even teach a class. However, I'd rather not go without the other items, so all my school items always stay in my dedicated schoolbag and are ready to go anywhere.

Any tips for getting things done anywhere?

Over the last few years my iPad has made me much more productive when I am out and about. Whether it is sitting in a cafe or in summer in the garden, I now have everything with me in such a small device that I can really take everywhere. I always make sure to have my currently used files in Dropbox so I can continue working on them seamlessly whether I am at my desk or anywhere else.
