EDC, WIMB, essentials, whatever you call the stuff you carry everyday is the topic of our latest blog series. We ask productive people to empty their bags and share their everyday carry with us to find out what helps them make stuff happen, what they can't live without and to satisfy your EDC / WIMB voyeuristic tendencies.
This month we talk to our in-house web developer, app developer and occasional social media marketer, Summer, and discover how her everyday carry gets her through a work and study day.
As a full-time employee and student (again), going light isn't always realistic. Fortunately, I mainly work from home, but I also like to work at nearby cafes, the local library or my uni library, and that's when going light becomes a real struggle.
I limit what I bring as much as I can, but that often has to include an iPad, my Jibun Techo planner, a scratch notebook, pens, flashcards, sunglasses, a hat (it's Australia and I worry about my skin), wipes, music, a camera of some sort, and during semester I usually carry my MacBook 12". I got the 12" because it fits in so many bags of mine, is light and the battery is decent. I get around five to six hours now, but during the first few months I think it managed around eight.
My planner case is by Hobonichi in Cousin size, which I get asked about a lot on tumblr. I've got a Jibun Techo in there that I had to order from Kinokuniya, because I prefer monthly and weekly views for tracking. But by having a thinner planner in there I can also fit in an iPad Mini, as well as lecture notes, invoices and some inspo into the sleeve.
it's all about the bag... compartments, crossbody, lightweight, durable, comfortable...
Definitely my iPhone and earphones. I can't operate without music and because I have the iPhone 6 Plus, reading books, articles and lecture notes in the Kindle app, iBooks or GoodReader is possible. If it could be a few more things, then a small notebook and pen, which at the moment for me is a Hobonichi in small (A6). Most things I transfer to a notebook dedicated to the subject, but there's a lot that just stays in there, like sketches for apps, websites or random notes for essays, etc. Could I also add sunglasses to my must-haves?
For me, it's all about the bag. Because I'm rarely off-duty, I need a bag that has compartments, is hands-free or crossbody, lightweight but durable, spacious yet comfortable, especially for the days I have to carry a textbook or laptop because they add weight. Most days I use a Proenza Schouler, like in the photo, but because of the thin straps I usually choose to sacrifice a textbook or laptop. The laptop usually wins and it helps that I use etextbooks whenever possible (so many are on Kindle now, but VitalSource and publisher websites are good places to check, too). Even though I've "invested" in a few bags like the PS1, my lifelong search for a true everyday bag will probably never be resolved...
