Surviving the holidays

Surviving the holidays

By the Roadmap+ Team

Holiday seasons are commonly a period of living outside of a reasonably timed and predictable routine and inside a sweet and savory epicurean utopia where there are few rules and no fitness amenities.

It's all too easy to forget those good habits we've honed and mindlessly join our friends and relatives into a sitting, chatting and eating wonderland. So what's one to do when it's that time of year?

there are few rules and no fitness amenities

  1. Eat socially. But do so mindfully and only when you're actually hungry.

  2. Designate a cheat day, but limit it to once per week rather than the entire holiday period. If you don't feel like it, move it forward a day or skip it altogether that week.

  3. Indulge in moderation. If you allow yourself a small treat, you'll be less likely to binge eat when you eventually give in.

  4. Take a walk when catching up with friends and relatives you haven't seen in ages.

  5. Encourage others to walk or exercise with you. Slot in these short sessions between meals or during activities you aren't participating in.

  6. Stick to a routine. Schedule exercise, do something towards achieving long-term goals and you'll also ensure a smooth transition back to school or work in January.

  7. Burn excess calories and gain some personal time by getting up an hour earlier. Use this time to exercise, go for a walk or handle personal matters.

  8. If you're following a strict diet or calorie intake, be strong and ask your friends and family for their support.

  9. Track in detail to maintain habits and weight. A food and exercise tracking app, device or smartwatch will keep you on your toes quite literally throughout the holidays.

  10. Most importantly, do use the holidays to take some time out for yourself. The key is not to confuse quality downtime with lounging around the entire holiday season.
