Nike said it best when it said "Just Do It.", because daydreaming, visualizing or planning alone won't get you any closer to where you want to be. Only doing something about it will.
There's value in discovering what you want and how to go about getting it, but things aren't really happening until you start doing things, tangible and relevant things, which really contribute to the goal in mind. To make stuff happen, making stuff has to happen. The longer you spend analyzing, planning and re-planning every step, the more daunting and elusive your goal will become.
Too much organization is as ineffective as too little. - Alan Lakein
Take the popular approach to building a new tech product. Aptly titled, Continuous Improvement, the stripped down version for developers is to get something out there as soon as possible, get real user feedback before over-perfecting something that potentially nobody is interested in, and either go back to the drawing board or continue improving from there. At least you have something in the market and you're taking steps, slowly but surely, to creating something people love.
If you adopt that approach to your personal endeavours, it translates into starting on small tasks as soon as is feasible. You'll find out sooner rather than later whether you're really working towards something you want, good habits will be developed, new skills will be honed, and you'll be more motivated as you begin to see progress.
Lastly, by incorporating Continuous Improvement concepts into your productivity toolset, you avoid falling into the trap of perfectionism. When you spend too much time planning and preparing to take action on your goals, perfectionism gets the better of you, increasing your own expectations and subsequently inducing a fear of failure, increasing stress, stunting growth and either setting yourself up for disappointment or preventing yourself from taking action.
